This September marks a significant milestone for Joseph Selego, the esteemed owner of Looks Hair Design, as he celebrates 50 years in the hair industry. Selego’s journey began as a liberal arts student at Penn State University. However, upon graduation, he recognized that his true passion lay elsewhere. While exploring his future career path, Selego accompanied his wife to a hair salon in Allentown, PA, where he was captivated by the vibrant energy and dynamic atmosphere of the salon environment.
Impressed by the experience, Selego began working as an assistant at the salon while attending beauty school. This pivotal role ignited his desire to establish his own business, leading him to open his first salon, ‘Cut and Dry,’ in State College. Subsequently, he acquired the location now known as ‘Looks Hair Design,’ initially managing both salons before focusing exclusively on Looks Hair Design in 1988.
Over the decades, Looks Hair Design has undergone significant evolution. “There are so many more things that we have education-wise, technique-wise that we learn and can be better able to give people what they want,” Selego observes. Another notable change is in the variety of hair products available. Selego began his career with just hairspray and setting lotion as his primary tools, but today, there is a vast array of products designed to suit every hair texture and pattern.
Selego takes great pride in mentoring aspiring professionals and witnessing their success. His favorite aspect of the job is the social interaction, particularly in State College. “There are so many accomplished and talented people who live and work here and from all different cultures. It’s the people that I get to meet and learn from and get to make happy. It’s the best job for me,” he shares.
When it comes to hiring, Selego prioritizes kindness and genuine character over technical skills. He believes that individuals who are personable and sincere, when provided with the right mentorship and environment, will excel in the beauty industry.
Looks Hair Design is currently undergoing an expansion to offer enhanced, personalized treatments, including massages, facials, and eyelash/eyebrow services.
Join Joseph Selego and his dedicated team in celebrating 50 years of success on Sunday, September 1, from 2-6 p.m. at the salon.
