February 3, 2017 – Two thousand, six hundred fifty two. That’s the number of ice luminaries required to break the Guinness World Record for the largest ice lantern display, and State College has that number in its sights. On Saturday, February 4th, the town will attempt to set a new world record by illuminating the 100 block of South Allen Street with upwards of 3,000 ice luminaries.
In recent weeks, organizers have distributed more than 1,000 luminary making kits to individuals and organizations who have committed to make ice lanterns for the event. While the kits have been sold out since Monday, it’s not to late to participate. You just have to get creative! The Light Up State College facebook page has some great ideas for how to create luminaries without the official kit. Whether you use a kit or decide to make your luminary through other means, be sure to drop off your completed frozen lantern at the registration table on Allen Street between 2 and 5 p.m. on Saturday. Then stick around for the fun as the luminaries are counted and lit!
With the community’s help, State College is poised to take its place in the record books. Don’t miss out on the fun!
Special thanks to The Make Space, Centre Foundation & Knight Foundation for bringing this fun event to Downtown State College!
