VanDance Inc. at Tempest Studios is offering a free hands-on workshop to create your own Dance & Theatre Film on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 4-7pm taught by professionals in the field.
Are you a film buff, love telling stories through dance or film, or have always wanted to direct a mini-film or just make a TikTok video? Or you might be a budding choreographer and looking for a chance to be in a project. You’ll want to check out this workshop, open to creative community members of all ages and levels of experience.
The workshop is open to any community member aged 13 and up, and parents/guardians with younger charges may participate as a family. The artist-led workshop will take place on June 4 from 4-7 p.m. at Tempest Studios, 140 Kelly Alley, in State College, followed by the screening of the dance film, “Take the Lead” at 7pm. Please register to participate at: https://forms.gle/WSrQZgsdQQadU8t88.
Family and friends may come to watch a studio showing of the workshop’s film and live creations at 6:30pm followed by a screening of “Take the Lead,” which was a 2006 Nominee for the Teen Choice Award. The film is rated PG-13 and is open to anyone who wishes to attend only the film. A $5 donation is suggested.
“Take the Lead” is an acclaimed American drama dance film directed by Liz Friedlander. In the film, internationally renowned dancer Pierre Dulaine (Antonio Banderas) takes a teaching job in a New York City public school, but initially meets ridicule from the streetwise students, who scoff at the notion of ballroom dancing. Rather than being discouraged, he melds their hip-hop moves with his classical style, helping them create a dance form and, in the process, becoming their mentor.
