MARCH MOVIE NIGHT FEATURES NEWSIES AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF
IRISH DANCE

VanDance Inc. continues its monthly film series of unique dance,
theatre, and performance art films. In March we are focusing on
Musical Theatre Dance. Irish Step Dancing contributed to the
development of Tap Dance and Musical Theatre Dance in the United
States during the 1800s.

The March film is Disney’s Newsies, a true story about a heroic
group of New York City newsboys who find the courage to take
on a powerful newspaper tycoon in order to make their dreams
come true. The exciting dance scenes by choreographer Kenny
Ortega are “Big, Bright, (and) Rousing!” according to the Los
Angeles Times. On Sunday afternoon, March 19, come on down to
Tempest Studios, 140 Kelly Alley in State College, for popcorn
and a movie. Learn about the language and message of dance,
that is found in the Irish Dance tradition during this weekend of St.
Patty’s Day! (Rated PG for mild violence.)
