This month VanDance celebrates the art forms of Spain on Sunday, April 16 at 7pm with our Dance Movie Night featuring Carlos Saura’s “El Amor Brujo.” Saura, who “fell in love with dance through the lens of his camera, that extension of himself with which he looked at the world and built a universe of his own” (El Pais USA Edition) wrote and directed this third musical film of his 1980’s flamenco trilogy. It tells a tale of “The Sorcerer Love,” in a ballet by Manuel de Falla. The artist panel at the beginning of the evening includes the Herrera-Register Duo discussing flamenco music’s connection to dance. They will share a short piece entitled “La flamenca fantasma” by C.C. Herrera & P. B. Register. Artistic Director Ann Van Kuren will complete the panel. This event is supported by a 3 Dots Awesome Grant and support from Galaxy, The Arts in Education Program of CIU #10, in partnership with the PA Council on the Arts. Admission is free ($5 donations recommended).

About the Artist Panel:

The Herrera-Register Duo has enjoyed an international career as a flute and guitar duo, highlighting music from the Hispanic World in their repertoire. Forever proponents of sharing the joy of music, and as seekers of beautiful melodies that communicate, Flutist Dr. Cathy Collinge Herrera and guitarist Dr. P. Brent Register have collaborated both in performance as well as original compositions and arrangements, resulting in world premieres throughout the Americas in international festivals, plus chamber and orchestral concert series.

Ann Van Kuren is a dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist based in State College, PA. Her creative work is focused on telling stories of people, places, and events through movement and dance, enmeshed in a sound environment. Recent themes and interests include the Jazz Age, femininity, time and water as valuable resources, and relating romantic-era literature, as well as folk tales and poetry, through contemporary movement, and exploring their powerful message to our lives and times. To this end she has collaborated with traditional storyteller, Jan Kinney, from Altoona, and composers, actors, and writer-directors, including New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania based, Tempest Productions, on retelling the work of Edgar A. Poe.

This residency is possible due to a grant from Galaxy, The Arts in Education Program of CIU#10. VanDance Inc. receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
