April is National Poetry Month, so we are kicking it off this First Friday! Collect poems from the downtown businesses your own poetry book. You can pick up your “poetry passport” folder with a list of all participating locations. Check out the list below, and stay tuned for more locations! If you are a business owner and would like to handout a poem, please contact the DSCID at [email protected].

Wine, Cheese and Pop-Up Shop…OH MY!

Come celebrate with Harper’s as they’re moving into their new location. While not setup quite yet, they will be having a pop-up shop with their products in their new location: 224 E. College Ave. For the pop-up shop you can enter through Centennial Way, directly across from the Tavern. Stop in between 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

Pop-Up Pottery Sale

Woskob Family Gallery is moving out of their space for this First Friday, and is hosting Penn State’s Pottery Club in a pop-up pottery shop in the downtown in front of the Allen Street Gates from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.  See all the unique pottery for purchase!

 

Free Bites

The Branch and The Vine will have some tasty treats in addition to their usual sampling of olive oil and balsamic. Definitely checkout their newest addition: a wine bar!

 

Create a Poem, Create a Tree!

Get over to Old State Clothing Co. and grab some light refreshments while creating a leaf poem to add to the Poet-tree!

 

 Penn State Downtown Theatre

Plan on buying tickets to the opening night of the exhilarating musical, The Light in The Piazza! The musical starts at 7:30 p.m. but doors will be open at 6:00 p.m. at the Penn State Downtown Theatre 

 

Girls Night!

Opening Reception at the Art Alliance Gallery Downtown

Stop by the Art Alliance Gallery Downtown for the opening reception of In a Place Called Home: Scenes from Central PA from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. “In A Place Called Home: Scenes from Central PA, eight Centre Country artists dedicate their practice to capturing the effervescent spirit of this magnificent landscape. Through varying processes and with unique perspectives, they share with us the essence of what it means to call Centre County ‘home.'”

 

Art Exhibit & Reception at The Expect More Store

 The Expect More Store presents the work of local artist Jean Forsberg during First Friday!  Stop by to view her original abstract oil paintings; enjoy cheeses, wine, & beer; and enter the prize drawing.  5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at The Expect More Store on Allen Street.

Artist Reception at The State Theatre

Head over the The State Theatre for featured artist, Young Sook Kim. There will be a meet and greet reception in the lobby between 5 – 8pm!

 

Artist Reception at Webster’s

Stop by Webster’s Bookstore and Cafe for an artist reception with Alex Hess from 6-7 p.m. “Alex Hess is a premiere artisan illustrator that focuses on creating what would be best described as intricate illustrations influenced by retro compositions and stylistic traits. Inspirations range from vintage Americana, Art Nouveau, Pop Art, Art Deco, Street Art, and even contemporary poster artists in the ever revolving print world.”

Kitchen Kaboodle

Kitchen Kaboodle will be showcasing beautifully framed poetry and many other typography themed items. Dogs are welcome!

Good Vibes

Jam out with Good Vibes Jazz Quartet in front of the First National Bank on South Allen Street from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.  They will be performing a variety of music genres from country, to Latin, to Dixieland! There’s something for everyone.

 

Eric Ian Farmer

Enjoy singer, songwriter Eric Ian Farmer in the Tavern Walkway from 5 p.m.- 9 p.m. He’ll be performing originals along with some covers!

 

Intermission Improv

Intermission Improv will be performing at the Barranquero Cafe between 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Stop by to hear their alternative Indie jam.

 

Performing Arts School of Central Pennsylvania

PASCP will be performing sections from their Cinderella showcase at the Schlow Library . In addition, some of the dancers’ Cinderella-themed poetry will be on display. Stop by between 5 p.m.-8 p.m. to witness the magic!

 

Urban Fusion

Urban Fusion will be bringing their smooth jazz in front of the Student Bookstore from 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

 

Strolling Magician

Richard Beinnghoff will be making his way through the downtown mystifying all who pass with his awe inspiring magic tricks from 5-9 p.m.
